Student Evaluations
Course: Film Appreciation
Sam Houston State University Fall 2020
“Professor Simor is truly an amazing teacher who is very passionate about film and personally I did not care for film behind the screen until I saw her passion and this in turn made me love watching and analyze film as an art. Truly grateful for her and her dedication to the course and her students.”
“First of all, I would like to say thank you for everything that you did for me during my first semester. Attending your class was an eye-opening experience and it gave me something to wake up and look forward to learning and having new experiences. It honestly gave me a reason to do work and re-evaluate my situation and where I am in life right now. So, after much self-reflection and deliberation, I've decided that I want to go to film school and major in Film & TV Production.”
“I really enjoyed the class Zoom meetings, especially towards the end of the semester. She knew how to engage us students well and how to get a reaction or an answer from us. She made sure that our peers are contributing to the conversation and that it's not just her talking for hours. Thank you for your teachings this semester, I really enjoyed it!”
“I really loved this course and gained a deeper understanding of film and writing analysis for film. With the course it has spiked an interest in film and writing that I want to continue in other courses that you teach and I hope to see you next semester! Also, you were one of my only professors that actually made class fun to come to in a Zoom setting. Where we could come together and discuss what we had learned from the previous week. I just want to say thank you for that because I felt like I was learning in your class, unlike my other ones, where I was just doing busy work and memorizing and not learning. Thank you!”
“Excellent instructor whom I would happily recommend to any Mass Communication major or minor.”
“Having you as a professor for my first Honors Project made this experience really great. You are an amazing professor and I genuinely enjoyed meeting with you to discuss my selected film. It was so interesting to learn about your opinions on other films and your life in Hungary. I also loved taking your Film Appreciation course. I was able to learn so much about films, and now I cannot watch things the same way. Anytime I watch a movie or show, I am always looking out for techniques and meanings. You also gave me the opportunity to watch films I would have never thought to look for. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night remains my all-time favorite film now. :)”
“Eszter Simor is an excellent professor, I really enjoyed her class, teaching style, and course content. She encourages discussion in every class and is very supportive of students even if they do not give the answer she is looking for.”
“This class was cool. The class was fun because it taught us how to be more critical and analytic while introducing us to cool movies. All of the ones shown were well-crafted, so it really makes you want to watch A24, Searchlight, and Wes Anderson movies. Thanks for helping to guide us, Professor Simor. You were real understanding and patient, and helped us find our way to the conclusions when we couldn't exactly figure out how to say what we were thinking.”
“Professor Simor is an exceptional film professor who has extensive knowledge on films and teaches students the cultural significance of films in which we learn about in the class.”
“Did not plan on taking this course, but glad I did. You are such a great professor. Lectures were interesting and filled with information, even the longer ones. I liked how you did the class discussion by asking us questions and asking about our point of view. Thank you for this semester and I really enjoyed the films, lectures, and class discussions.”
“You're a very understanding and kind teacher!”
Course: Writing for Mass Media
Sam Houston State University Fall 2020
“This is an outstanding professor who really went above and beyond for her students. She made sure we were all engaged throughout the whole course and out of all my other professors, Professor Simor was the most organized and best professor I could ask for during this pandemic semester.”
“Professor Simor was very communicative and precise regarding our assignments and exams, especially during class Zoom meetings, which enlightened me on what she expects from her students and how to understand the class material. She was an effective teacher.”
“Great teacher. Lots of work but this course gets you ready if this is what you want to do as a profession.”
“I enjoyed this class even though I started out hating writing journalism papers. I learned that what I really disliked was writing English papers, not journalism papers. Overall, out of the classes I took this semester, this was one of my top favorites. I like how Dr. Simor was very responsive to emails and helpful when I had questions.”
“This course was really lovely in all aspects, you put a lot of effort in teaching and your lectures and it shows. Thank you so much for a good semester and an excellent intro to journalism.”
“Great professor; always provided great feedback on assignments and how we could do better on future assignments.”

Student Feedback
Is there anything specific that you like about the course?
“The selection of films appears very broad and the films are exemplary.”
“I enjoy the way the tutorials are structured, allowing for lots of student participation while also introducing us to some important terminology and theory.”
“I really like how it’s a new film/new genre each week. We’re not stuck in the same one for ages. I like the lectures and tutorials. Honestly really enjoying it.”
“Really enjoying the fact that my tutor prepares PowerPoints with really useful information such as the definitions of important terminology. Enjoy the lectures especially as all the lecturers seem to be very passionate and thorough. Really enjoy the variety of films we have had thus far. I enjoy the fact that the lectures take place before the screenings because then we can go into watching the films knowing what to look out for/what we weren't expecting rather than going in blindly and then concentrating on the wrong things.”
“The way we talk about the movies in tutorials.”
