Mission Statement
SHSU values an inclusive campus community and my students come from varied backgrounds (18% Black or African-American, 22% Hispanic/Latino). I am committed to promoting our inclusive campus culture by emphasizing the importance of diversity in my syllabi. Film remains a very privileged art form, so it is especially important for me to feature women filmmakers and directors of color in my selected corpus. While we do analyze canonized film classics from the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles and Stanley Kubrick in my Film Appreciation course, I also make a point of introducing my students to acclaimed directors like Cheryl Dunye, Charles Burnett and Lucrecia Martel.
